S. Gerard Conklin (1903-1975), previously of Alexander, Buchanan, and Conklin, and Robert L. Benham, now retired, founded the firm.

Initially, Conklin Benham concentrated exclusively on matters of workers' compensation defense.  In order to more adequately meet the needs of its clients, Conklin Benham expanded its services to include liability defense representation.  As the reputation of the firm grew and to assist clients throughout the state, the Traverse City office opened in 1983, and an office in Grand Rapids was then opened , enabling the firm to service clients in all counties in Michigan.
